Overview

The Pirin Ultra 2024 is an annual ultramarathon that takes place in the stunning Pirin Mountains of Bulgaria. The race is held over three days and covers a total distance of 160 kilometers (100 miles). Runners will encounter a variety of terrain, including forests, meadows, and rocky peaks.

History

The Pirin Ultra was first held in 2010 and has quickly become one of the most popular ultramarathons in Europe. The race attracts runners from all over the world, and the field is always competitive. The 2023 race was won by Bulgarian runner Kiril Nikolov in a time of 23 hours and 34 minutes. The women's race was won by American runner Stephanie Howe in a time of 29 hours and 12 minutes.

Course

The Pirin Ultra course is a challenging but rewarding one. The race starts and finishes in the town of Bansko, and the route takes runners through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pirin Mountains. The course includes a mix of trails, forest roads, and rocky peaks. The highest point on the course is Vihren Peak, which is 2,914 meters (9,560 feet) above sea level.
