Iga SwiÄ…tek becomes the first Polish tennis player to reach the Olympic quarter-finals

Polish star defeats Begu in the opener

Swiatek continues her impressive run of form

Iga Swiatek has made history by becoming the first Polish tennis player ever, woman or man, to reach the singles quarter-finals of the Olympics. The 20-year-old achieved the feat with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 victory over Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu in the opener of the Olympic women's tennis tournament.

Swiatek, who is currently ranked world No. 8, is known for her aggressive style of play and powerful groundstrokes. She broke Begu's serve twice in the first set and once in the second to take the match in straight sets.

The win is the latest in a string of impressive results for Swiatek, who has won the French Open four times in the last two years. She is now one of the favorites to win the gold medal in Tokyo.

Swiatek will face Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva in the quarter-finals.
