Ignatius Of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola: Founder of the Society of Jesus

Feast Day: July 31

A Basque Soldier Turned Catholic Priest and Theologian

Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) was a Basque soldier who became a Catholic priest and theologian. His mystical experiences led him to a life of service, and he founded the Society of Jesus.

Ignatius was born in Spain in 1491. He fought as a soldier in the Spanish army and was wounded at the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. While recovering from his wounds, he underwent a profound spiritual experience that led him to abandon his military career.

After his conversion, Ignatius spent time studying theology and spirituality. He eventually received a doctorate from the University of Paris.

In 1540, Ignatius founded the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. The Jesuits are a religious order dedicated to the education of youth and the care of souls.

Ignatius of Loyola died in Rome on July 31, 1556, was canonized (officially made a saint) by Pope Gregory XV in 1622.
